Welcome to this new section of our Doctor Piano website!

From time to time I will be posting thoughts, ideas, suggestions, news, etc. all related to organs and, especially, Allen organs. To get things rolling, though, I thought I’d post a biography about me, so you get an idea of whom you’re dealing with when you call upon Doctor Piano to help you select a new organ:

Andrew Barss has over 40 years of experience consulting on, installing, voicing, and servicing the more than 150 Allen organs in use throughout the Maritime Provinces.

Andrew studied piano with Iris Rock of Dartmouth and, later, organ with Dr Maitland Farmer of Halifax and has sung in various church and/or community choirs since childhood.

All other members of Andrew’s immediate family were also engaged in various aspects of music including singing, piano, organ, and violin. His father and grandfather were both church organists and choir directors in the Halifax/Dartmouth area and, for about 20 years, his father was the Allen organ representative for the Maritimes. In short, music is in Andrew’s genes.

In 1971, the Allen Organ Company introduced the world’s first digital musical instrument—the Allen Computer Organ. At the “ripe age” of 11 years, the idea of mixing computer/digital technology with music captivated Andrew’s imagination, and he was hooked!

Working with his father, he was servicing Allen organs by the age of 14 and, at age 17 was the youngest person to write and pass the exam to be certified as an Allen organ service technician. He has also been directly involved in the installation and voicing of over 150 Allen organs throughout the Maritime Provinces.

Since the mid-1970s, Andrew worked with Allen organs and between 1981 and 2013 had a full-time career with the Province of Nova Scotia in information technology and communications.

In 2013, Andrew retired from the provincial government and is now dedicated full-time to bringing his more than 40 years of experience to looking after your needs in selecting a suitable instrument for your church or home.
